Government Event (Winter 2000) Civic Mirror Classroom Video Series, Episode 12

Government Event

Government Event

In The Civic Mirror, every simulated year is made up of four in-class events (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall), and this video shows students participating in the first one: The Government Event. Here politicians pass legislation, set tax rates, implement policy, and nominate/approve citizens for positions of power (like the National Judge). What’s great is that students get to experience the democratic process first-hand as they work to steer their country down a path that will benefit them individually as well as collectively.

The Government Event is the one Civic Mirror event that varies greatly depending on the module being used. In the U.S. Module, there is 1 President, 5 House Reps, and 3 Senators. In the Canadian (and soon-to-be U.K. module) there are 7 MPs. The Student Manuals come with scripts that guide the activity for students, and minimize the prep-work for instructors.

This first Government Event will be a learning experience for you and your students. Make sure you know the Winter procedure outlined in the Student Manual quite well: your students will have lots of questions and they will likely stray off course, so you will want to be able to guide them.

This video is of a simulated House of Commons (i.e. the students are using the Canadian Module). The spirit, however, for all of the Government Events is the same.

ARE YOU WONDERING WHAT THE CIVIC MIRROR IS?
Basically it’s a government and economics simulation that turns classrooms into countries and students into citizens. Far more than just a game, The Civic Mirror is a fully comprehensive civic education program that turns the old rules of teaching and learning on their head. Students actively assume real-world citizenship roles – both in the classroom and online – and work as individuals to provide for imaginary families and achieve hidden agendas, while working together to build a strong, democratic nation.
